People Sound is proud to announce In Fight & In Flow, an excursion into explorative ambient electronics by Dhawaral/Wollongong-based trumpeter and sound artist Nick Calligeros.

Nick has worked as professional creative trumpeter for more than 10 years, as a member of improviser-composer collective Microfiche, leader of ambient-instrumental quintet SOFT SPOT, and appearing on records by beloved Australian indie acts like Tangents, Middle Kids and Human Noise.

In Fight & Flow features Calligeros’ near exclusive use of self-recorded found sounds to create lush sonic textures. ‘In Fight & In Flow’ features an array of sounds including jars in his pantry, the clicks and pops of his trumpet, frogs in Tasmania, to piano excerpts recorded in various places during his travels.

‘I began making music on my laptop back in 2014 as a way of expanding my musical skill set beyond the trumpet. Initially, I found the near limitless possibilities of making music on a DAW overwhelming and so I constrained myself to playing around with only sounds I recorded. I found this limitation actually enhanced my creative possibilities and unknowingly became a big part of my overall sonic aesthetic. I began recording sounds everywhere I went and layering them with different effects, creating these interesting “textures”.’

The release marks a significant creative development since his 2019 debut In Bloom, In Blend, with denser and more sophisticated sound collages throughout, and a number of longer, more meditative tracks. This shift in tone since the last release also reflects his move to Wollongong/Dharawal country during the early days of COVID lockdown, with the palette of sounds shifting from an urban sharehouse environment of Sydney’s Inner West to the lush natural surrounds of the Illawarra coast and forest.
