PEOPLE SOUND presents the long-awaited debut solo double bass offering from Jacques Emery, known as a versatile performer/composer/improviser based on Eora land in so-called Sydney.

ARCO is a concise manifesto in movement-patterns with the German double bass bow.

Across four pieces, Emery interrogates a range of bowing techniques learned during his classical training, creating immersive sound-worlds with cascades of hypnotic bowing patterns. A stark palette of open strings, harmonics and scordatura (alternate tunings) allows micro-details in rhythm and texture to come to the fore, accentuated by the acoustics of an old Sydney church.

The resulting music captures both the sustained resonance and harmonic transparency of drone music, and the rhythmic intensity of a solo drummer.

EP highlight ’Arco Triplet Dance’ showcases a unique triplet-spiccato stroke, developed and refined over 2 years through an iterative process of improvisation and reflection.

Emery sets out on the ambitious task of creating a hybrid music that expresses his love for the double bass via his experiences in classical, improvised, jazz, experimental, and electronic musics, all with the vital spontaneity of improvisation and the refined execution of composition.
