about

People Sound is proud to present the debut album from Sydney-based jazz trio Sandcastles. These three young musicians have recorded a gorgeous collection of original tunes with moments of delicate lyricism, soothing minimalism, and powerful post-rock climaxes.

Liner notes by Hinano Fujisaki:

"Recently, I have been most interested in simple melodies and how they can be shaped and developed throughout a song. When I first brought in these melodies to rehearse with Harley and Chloe, I was unsure of the exact direction I wanted each piece to take. As a trio, we were able to experiment and workshop these melodies in the hope of making them sing and tell stories. In the end, I think we were able to create music that is powerful yet fragile and honest. I am always inspired by my amazing friends, Harley and Chloe, who are always pushing me and the music in new and exciting directions. Thank you for your beautiful music making.

I wrote both Yellow Pink to Blue and Lonely Boat Song during the lockdown period at the start of last year. I had been inspired especially by the melodies that the Motian/Frisell/Lovano trio explore on their album, I Have the Room Above Her. My own short melodies came to me quite naturally when I first wrote them out on piano. They were singable and reminded me of certain images or feelings. Afterthoughts and Country Song were written by Harley. These songs remind me of warmth and open landscapes. Akatombo is the only track on the album that isn’t an original composition. It translates to red dragonfly, and is a Japanese folk tune I remember singing with my mum when I was young. The melody is simple and very beautiful, and it inspired my compositions, especially Tanuki and my improvisations throughout the album."
